Ask Kimmy: Any Tips To Hide My Big Shoulders?
I need some fashion advice or advice in general for hiding big shoulders and having a rectangular shape all the way down. I have normal sized thighs, because I’m sporty, but I don’t have hips!
Please help!! Thanks!
Hi Hailey! Isn’t it funny how we always want what we don’t have? As someone with wide hips, I’ve often wondered what life might be like if they were smaller, but you know that’s a scary slippery slope! So instead, we both have to embrace this blessed body we have and make the best of it. And it sounds like yours is doing you good! Glad to hear you’re strong and active and sporty – so hot! I can totally see how broad shoulders and no hips could certainly make some ensembles hard to pull off, but I’m so glad you came to me! Here are a few fabulous ways to minimize your shoulders while enhancing your hips!
Opt for colorblocking, with a lighter color on top. Take, for example, Naya Rivera’s Michael Kors dress at the People’s Choice Awards last week, shown left. Bringing the darker color to your hips will make them appear bigger, and the lighter shade on top will minimize the width of your shoulders. For winter and transition to spring, try Olive & Oak’s two-tone sweater ($68), Eileen Fisher’s quad-colored sweater ($288) or Enza Costa yummy cashmere sweater ($275).
Swing, pleated and A-line skirts are your new wardrobe besties. These bring volume to your lower half and balance out what’s happening up top. I recommend NOT tucking in your top, so as to create an illusion of thin legs and thin shoulders, like the blogger, left. Try this adorable Lily White Skater Skirt ($28), or a silhouette like ETOILE Isabel Marant’s flared mini skirt ($155).
As far as jeans go, mid-rise is major. If you go for a super low jean, you’re going to notice that your hips disappear. If you go for super high waist, your shoulders will appear bigger. Hence, the mid-rise. My favorites include BDG at Urban Outfitters, Koral, and J Brand.
For dresses, source halters and one shoulders. Let First Lady Michelle Obama be your inspiration! A deep v or keyhole is a fab detail for you, without being overtly sexy! I adore Jenny Yoo’s crinkled chiffon halter dress ($340) or Halston Heritage’s flirty and short bow dress ($187).
