Are Oxfords the New Ballerina? Finding the Best of Springtime Flats!
I can’t bring myself to put on another pair of ballerinas. Don’t get me wrong, I love them! But I’m just super into wearing a more modern, boyish oxford. But searching for the right one is a painstaking process! With an oxford/brogue, I think you have to have some authenticity – something that feels precisely true to a masculine tradition. Toe (how rounded? should it turn upwards? etc.), heel (stacked? flat? narrow? wide? etc.), fabric (stiff? washed and soft? etc.), and detail (laces? no laces? studding? grommeting? tooling? etc) are all factors in finding the perfect flat oxford that can be all too overwhelming. But here, I’ve found some pretty amazing options at all sorts of price-ranges that make it SUPER hard to choose. Take a peek and tell me if you think any of them are you!?!
A metallic shoe is seasonless – it can dress up your summer stripes or fanc-ify your denim cut-off’s, and it can tone-down your velvet dress or convert your all black look to perfect chicness. Bass went all out with their gilded saddle shoe! ($89) Need a more subtle shimmer of gold? Try Marsell’s incredibly comfy metallic flats ($538). And if you have the cash to drop, get Maison Martin Margiela’s raffia gold glitter brogues – amazing! ($940)
If silver is more your thing, Mod Cloth’s Chrome A Little CLoser flat is pointy perfection! ($189). Similarly but not as reflective on the silver scale, I’m obsessed with DSquared’s silver metallic brogues (and they’re on sale for $310).
So so so boyish and chic! Love L.A.M.B.’s pony hair houndstooth and soft black patent leather brogues ($295). They’re surprisingly comfy, too and I certainly appreciate the mini daggers on the end of the laces. The stacked heel on this is awesome if you crave that extra height but can’t stand a high heel.

What a fantastic evening flat from Jenni Kayne who took her fabulous D’Orsay flat and wrapped it in satin and added boyish velvet bows ($550). File under Must Have.
I admit, I’m a relentless fan of animal-inspired prints and fabrics, and this pale mint green snakeskin oxford from Robert Clergerie is no exception. Def take the laces out of this one (which means ordering a half size smaller!). ($550)
One of my favorite new shoe lines, Bionda Castena (Blonde Brunette in Italian), made this fantastic ivory patent monk strap shoe that makes me go gaga. literally gaaaaah gahhhhhhh. Nordstrom carries a few of their pairs, but otherwise I believe you can order online through their site.
Also in the natural-tones, I love the perfect heel of Rachel Roy’s Laith Lace-Ups ($275). Tri-tone is hot, y’all.
A fun tapestry print can totally double as much rocker as it does vintage prepster (think Taylor Swift). ($37.99)
Perforations are a perfect alternative, especially as the weather gets hot! Pop these flats from 3.1 Philip Lim ($498) with bright skinnies and a half-tucked silk blouse. Add a fun fedora!
I also adore a little bit of metallic edging in a brogue! Forever 21’s metal trim oxfords ($25) are so adorbs with a vintage tee tucked into an A-line or Pencil skirt.
