Ask Kimmy: I Need Shoes For My Formal, But My Date is Only 1 Inch Taller!

Name: Erin H.
Age: 16
Height: 5’10”

Hey Kimmy!
So I have this big formal dance coming up and I’m kind of nervous about my outfit. My date is only one inch taller than me and I don’t want to be too tall compared to him in pictures.  I already picked out my dress (photo, left) and I need to find shoes that would match that aren’t too tall and also some jewelry.  If you could respond that would help me so much!

Hey Lady!
I adore your choice of dress. It’s demure and classic, flattering and totally versatile. You’ll be able to wear this again on an important night out with your parents with a black blazer, tights and heels, or even to a more casual party with rocker boots, ripped tights and a leather jacket. Tres fab!  For a formal affair though, I think this dress really does shine with heels. In the future, opt for an A-line or swingy mini dress to pair with flats…of course, I still have some options for you!

I know how weird it can seem to be taller than your date, but it’s actually kinda hot! My man is actually only an inch taller than me, as well! But that does not stop me from wearing sky high platforms wherever we go. So while I’d actually push you to go for a shoe that is perfect for the look and comfy enough to dance all night without any regard to heel height, I totally had to go through a stage where I only wore flats and low heels with my man, testing out his reactions and my confidence.  So, I’m going to suggest some shoes that are high and low, and perfect. And, don’t forget, you can always take your shoes off for the photo. Wink, wink.

I love pairing a long sleeved mini with platforms. The covered arms are the perfect excuse to show off an elongated leg, right? Slather on some shimmery lotion and a platform open toed Mary Jane like these gorgeous blue patterned Sam Edelman’s ($95).

But you don’t have to go for a matchy-match blue! I’d style the royal shade with other jeweled tones like ruby red, charcoal, and deep taupe, like in these sophisticated Jean-Michele Cazabats. ($216)

Along those charcoal lines, I couldn’t help but fall deeply in lust with these glittery charcoal slingback’s from Carvela. Especially when you take a look at the price, these’ll glam up your tootsies perfectly!  ($76.36)

Speaking of glitter, channel the gilded speckles into a fabulous flat that will look equally fabulous with sundresses and cuffed jeans come springtime. These mouse toed-must-have’s from Marc by Marc Jacobs are a fantastic option. ($235)

J.Crew also makes a more simplified glitter flat, and I love the charcoal shade for your dress! ($128)

As far as jewels are concerned, I think this dress is amazing with a fabulous sleek ponytail or stick straight hair. Let your earrings make the statement, like these Betsey Johnson  bow teardrop sparklers ($40).

Top off the look with an uber cute and verstile velvet bow bag, also from Betsey Johnson!

Please send me pics of your full ensemble?  I would love to see!
